My name is Luscious – well, actually, my name is Hope Bixby, and my stage name is Luscious. I work at a hopping little topless bar, lovingly named “Juggz.” I took the job after moving from a tiny, one-stoplight town in Kentucky to the big city in search of new, exciting experiences. Unfortunately, I let myself get wrapped up in the atmosphere and became susceptible to the men I met at work, having a string of meaningless one night stands. Before long I decided that I wanted more; I deserved more. I wanted to have a relationship, and actually be with someone I loved. So from that moment on, work became simply work. I would flirt and chat as a part of my job, but never let things get physical. I would put in my time and go home, alone, to focus on myself and things I liked to do. To truly be happy, Luscious and Hope had to become two very separate, very different entities. Sure, I liked my job, but it was unhealthy to let it consume every part of my life. Certainly not my love life. Eventually, I gave up on looking for love. I figured when the time was right, love would find me. I was at peace with being alone. I had no idea how soon things were about to change.

Excerpt

I finished up a long shift at the club, working ‘til closing. I changed into yoga pants (which, by the way, had never seen the inside of a yoga class) and a comfortable T-shirt, my mind set on getting home and going straight to bed. I had several days off, and wanted to get a start on them. Scott, one of our bouncers, walked me to my car. I had saved up enough money to buy a newer used car- a little red 2007 Nissan Altima. It wasn’t anything fancy, and it had its quirks, but it was a hundred times better than the clunker I had been driving when I first took the job. And I had worked hard to buy it for myself. I am very proud of it.

“Thanks, Scott. See you next week,” I said as I climbed into my car.

He nodded at me and walked back to the building. I threw my bag in the backseat and heard my stomach growling. I hadn’t eaten in hours. I didn’t feel like going home and cooking something, but I didn’t think any drive-thrus would be serving breakfast yet. The sun hadn’t come up yet, but the sky was getting lighter. I drove a couple blocks until I came to a little convenient mart, and decided to run in and grab something quick to eat. I figured it’d help me stay awake for the drive home anyway.

I picked up a pack of doughnuts and made my way to the pop cooler. Super healthy, I know. As I stood there trying to decide what I wanted to drink, a presence approached behind me, and stopped. I didn’t think much of it at first, and went on with my decision-making. A few moments passed though, and the figure was still behind me. My tired mind worried that maybe someone had followed me from the club, or that maybe it was some pervert ogling me from behind. Either way, I was in the right mood for a fight. I grabbed a pop, took a deep breath, and turned around quickly.

“Look, buddy. I ain’t lookin’ for trouble-“

My eyes fell on the man behind me, and I froze. He towered above me; my best guess would put him at least at 6’3” or 6’4”. His frame was broad and solid. His hair was a few shades lighter than mine, fixed in messy spikes. A closely trimmed beard ran along his strong jaw and framed his full lips. And, he was starting back at me with the most gorgeous green eyes I had ever seen.

“I’m sorry, ma’am. I didn’t mean to startle you. I was only waiting my turn.”

“No, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have snapped. I just got off work and I’m tired and a little jumpy.”

“Oh, I understand. I used to work nights, too. I got switched to dayshift not too long ago. That’s where I’m headed now, to work. Fun, fun.”

My eyes scanned his body again, this time noticing his clothes. He looked like he was wearing some kind of uniform; black dress pants with a blue short-sleeved dress shirt tucked in, tight against his expansive chest. Security, maybe? He looked like he was a good protector. I’d let him protect me every night of the week. His husky voice broke me of my trance.

“So, you ain’t lookin’ for trouble, huh?” I would have thought he was making fun of me, had it not been for the warm smile on his face, and the thick southern accent in his voice. “Whereabouts are you from?”

“What, is it that obvious I’m not a city girl?” I tucked my hair behind my ear and smiled at him. His eyes sparkled as he looked back at me. Oh yes, we’re flirting. This is good, this is good….Oh no, this is bad. I remembered in that moment the slouchy, unattractive clothes I was wearing. My cheeks flushed a little, and I tucked my arms across my chest. Maybe he’s not flirting. Maybe he’s just being nice. No, I think he was flirting. Stop arguing with yourself, Hope, and answer the man! “Actually, I’m from Eubank, Kentucky. Let me guess, never heard of it?”

“No, actually I grew up not too far from there. I’m from Bloomfield.”

“No kidding. Small world, I guess.”

“Yep, guess so.” He held his hand out to me. “My name’s Caleb, by the way.”

“I’m Hope,” I said quietly while I shook his hand. It was huge (immediately giving me dirty thoughts, which I quickly pushed away), but his touch was gentle.

Hope. Nice to meet you.”

I stood there, holding on to his hand and losing myself in those beautiful emerald eyes. I realized several seconds had gone by, and felt my cheeks get hot again. “Well, Caleb, I better let you get to work.” I dropped his hand, but didn’t move.
