Ever since returning from a week in the woods with her best friend and sometime lover, vampire Sinton, Mackenzie’s dreams are filled with images of the legendary dark wolf of Lost Hollow. Unable to decipher her nightmares, Mac decides to confront her fears and returns to the cabin she shared with the roguish vampire.
Alone and searching for answers, Mac realizes she bit off more than she can chew.
The dark wolf exists, and he’s stalking her in real time.
Excerpt
“Come on, Mac. You know the dark wolf is just a myth.” Sinton ran his hand through his bangs and sighed.
“I used to think that. Something wants me to go back there.” I knew he’d never believe the wolf called to me, wanting me to come out of hiding like it had something to tell me.
“You think the wolf is summoning you. You think he’s dangerous, yet you want to go back there alone. Well, I won’t let you.” Sinton stood and began pacing around the room.
“It’s what I need to do. If you go with me, the wolf, or whatever the hell it is, won’t show himself.”
“You don’t know that.”
“I’ll call you if I run into trouble.”
“How are you going to do that? The phone signal in that valley is shitty at best.”
“I wasn’t planning on using a phone.”
“Then what? Oh, no…no way, I am not marking you.” Sinton lifted his hands in a pleading gestured then backed away from me.
“Come on, Sinton, you’ve done it before.” Last time he’d marked me it had been a claiming gesture, one meant to increase his power.
“Things were different then. We were different then. You don’t want me anymore, not like you used to.”
“So…”“So how am I supposed to stop thinking about you all the time if you wear my mark?” Sinton’s steel-gray eyes glowed as his fangs appeared.
“Sinton, if we were ever a couple, and I’m not saying we were, we broke up years ago. The only time I’ve ever worn your mark is when Algernon tried to incite the other vampires against you. I let you mark me then because you said doing so would make you stronger.”
“I know that, don’t you think I know that?” Sinton yelled. Turning away from me, he stomped over to the window.
Seeing the pained look on his face, I should have thought things through a little more. Sinton and I functioned best when we kept things light. The cavalier way I had asked him to mark me proved just how much the dream was getting to me. Usually, I was more sensitive to Sinton’s feelings for me.
“Sinton.” I climbed off the bed and walked over to him. “I never meant to hurt you.” And then I hugged him. “Let me explore my connection to the cabin, then I’ll come home and we can talk. I mean really talk about us.”
“Even with my mark, going back to that cabin isn’t the smartest thing to do. What if the myths are true? What if there really is some kind of dark wolf living in Lost Hollow?”
“If there is, I’ll call for you.”
“Through the mark I’m supposed to give you.”
“Yes.”
“But if I went with, I…”
“Would keep me from feeling what’s there. You would block me, just like you did before.”
Sinton didn’t respond; instead he stared into my eyes as if trying to mesmerize me. His vampire gaze had no effect on me. My own mysterious connection to the netherworld ensured no vampire would ever be able to enslave me. Suddenly, Sinton pulled me to him and kissed me. The kiss was soft and chaste. Despite the fragileness of the moment, a growl built up deep within his chest. Pulling from my mouth, Sinton bent his head down and kissed my neck, then sunk his fangs deep. Having already sated himself on my blood, he didn’t drink much. When done, he licked the wound closed then stared at my face.
“You’re eyes are such a strange shade of green,” he whispered as he kissed my forehead. “It’s as if all the greens in Ireland joined together to form a new color. A haunted color.”
“I know.” Ever since I was a child, I felt different and alone. Being with Sinton was the only thing that made me feel whole. Maybe that was why the thought of being with him on a more permanent basis scared me so much.
“Are you sure about this?” Sinton asked.
I nodded my head.
He brought his wrist to his mouth. Without bothering to wipe my blood off his lips, he bit down.
I swallowed hard as he placed his bleeding wrist against my mouth. Looking up into his eyes, I drank the vampire’s blood. Almost immediately I grew woozy. Within seconds, the world turned black.
When I woke up, I was laying in my bed, alone. Sinton had left my apartment. Glancing over at my closed window, I smiled as the sun rose.
